EDIT April 10: Some questions answered below
Low and behold, it seems when shit hits the fan it's one BIG pile.
Looks like the lovely company that houses Jason's (the server guy) server that Darknest (as well as OekakiCentral, Drawntobondage.ca and a host of other artist sites) is on does officially all bugger off on the weekends. So no after hours/weekend support should something go wrong.
Once Jason did get a hold of them they take anywhere from 15 mins to an hour to reboot the server every time, making extremely difficult for Jason to work on the server. All we know is this: some stuff on the server is corrupt.
Today Jason was able to get a system tech to go over and deal with the server. The company personel were late meeting up with him and had to take time to set up a station (which should be already available) for him to work with the server. So that's money down the drain for an hour of work the tech couldn't do because he had to wait.
Well, the tech did what he was told to but now there's another problem. Good Friday is up so Jason can't call them if something happens, they won't be there on the weekend, and we're finding out if they'll even be open on Monday.
We're also investigating if the corruption is not so much a hack attempt as a power problem at the company. They mentioned to Jason that Saturday there will be no power to the build all day. No explaintion.
So that's what we're dealing with, and as soon as Jason can he'll be moving the server to a new and closer place. We had no idea this company would be such a pain.

EDIT April 10: Some questions answered
Q: Has there been any significant loss of data?
As far as I know, the database, web files and images are fine. Jason won't know the full extent until he has a chance to look at the server. So lets hope for the best.
Q: What about DtB.ca memberships?
Not much I can do to extend memberships for the lost time since Verotel doesn't give me that option. Best I can do is give 1-2 extra updates to make up for the lost week.
Q: So do you know when the server will be back online?
Not a clue. If the company was easier to contact and work with this wouldn't of been a problem and the server would of been up last weekend. We're HOPING this week, so cross your fingers.

They are probably bankrupt... It wouldn't surprise me if they were anyway. They are just hiding it to avoid people to flee from the sinking vessel.
Do you know if there's been any significant loss of data yet, or should we start sacrificing pork-chops to C'thulu and hope for the best?
As for the ISP, if they aren't bankrupt yet, they sure as hell are going to be with that kind of service... Alas, i remember the times when people put an honor in doing their job right and on time...
Thanks for the update. :)
I don't see how servers can just go down suddenly, like assuming they pay their bills and the clients pay theirs, computer parts don't burn out that quickly that every week they'd be changing stuff. I'm not terribly knowledgeable of servers but I've built and repaired about a dozen personal computers in my time and it seems a bit odd to me.
Indeed, that sounds incredibly dodgy and definitely time to move. I feel sorry for you guys having to sort all this out
I'm just said i can't DL those skin edit files anywhere else, no other place seems up to date.
GL with finding a more reliable provider, which shouldnt be too hard to find better.
Probably don't want to get sued so keep info to a minimum. Thanks for the update, hugs.
What's going to happen to our DtB.ca memberships, ack?
Hope your back soon! I need my DN
Good luck getting the site(s) back online and working. I just hope "Time Heals Nothing" will be updated. ^_^
Glad you guys finally put something up on here; I've been checking it since Monday. I wouldn't imagine you have a date when the work should be done by? And any ideas where you'll wind up moving to?
any truth to the rumor blizzard finaly took legal action aganst you people ?.
Is it rented servers or do you own yourself the hardware ?
Blizzard can't take any legal action on Darknest or any of it's artist's. Since they aren't breaking any laws by having a fan based site..
I just hope the site being down hasn't suspended you from drawing the next page of the Orc/Troll/Dranei comic
sure they can there is a whole forum that helps peopel change in game skins which if you read that long list of rules everytime there is a patch is grounds right there for blizzard to poke there nos ein.ANyway the quistion wa si hope this is not do to somethign blizzard has done legaly.
Blizzard probably isn't involved or else we probably would have seen it somewhere.
As for the skin-change thing. Sure if you implement it on your own account then they can do something, as for just having the file there the only action they could take would be against the creator, but since they don't know who that is, punishment unlikely.
As for those files, i was wondering if they could be hosted elsewhere in the mean time?
Just wanted to lend my moral support to Jason and yourself getting through this! Just remember not to stress it.. work on some relaxing (sexy?) art, and things'll develop as they want.
If it is any comfort, any action against Darknest would be heavily publicized. At least an article on WoWInsider, likely more. Just like the glider case. When Blizz makes a move against "bad people" its best for them to let the fans talk and know. So, if something does happen, we'll likely hear about it.
I doubt Blizzard would make the fact that they are pursuing a WoW porno site a public matter. Just sayin'. This is completely different than the Glider case.
Also, I find it more comedic every time I try to access DN and come across the screen warning of a downed server, it reassures me it'll be up in 3 days. Time paradox!
I'm sure if Blizz had taken action against Darknest Ack would have told us. Even if they wouldn't want it to be a public matter, she would have at least told us.
If Blizzard did take action against Darknest they wouldn't of taken out all other sites on the server.
Oekaki Central, I2D, and several other artist sites have nothing to do with Blizzard specifically.
If we were taken out we would of posted a noticed.
Any news ?
wouldn't have taken, would have posted
Hey ack each week of the server /site being down , is members gonna get like 2-3 updates for every week we gotta wait? Just curious since the site is down and your having to wait like us but was curious if that gave you extra time to draw without having to deal with the site since your having to wait on the other guy to get it going .
